Abstract: Results are presented of a field experiment conducted with rice in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, to evaluate the effects of furrow and bed transplanting, irrigation management and weed control treatments (use of pretilachlor at 0.75 and metsulfuron at 0.015 kg/ha) on crop growth and crop-weed competition. The weed flora in the field comprised Echinochloa crus-galli, E. colonum, Eleusine spp., Eclipta alba [E. prostata], Trianthema monogyna [T. portulacastrum], Phyllanthus niruri and Cyperus iria. The results demonstrated significant improvement in the bioefficacy of pretilachlor with improved moisture conditions. Data on weed density and dry matter accumulation, crop dry matter accumulation, number of effective tillers/m2, filled grains per panicle and grain yield are given
