Abstract: Field studies were conducted in West Bengal, India, in 2011, to determine some non-traditional herbicides against weeds in jute cv. JRO-524. Various rates of the herbicides butachlor, pretilachlor and pendimethalin were tested. Visual observations were made every day to understand the changes in growth behaviour of jute and appearance of phytotoxic symptom due to herbicidal toxicity at different doses. Results sho wed that the maximum herbicide rate tolerated by jute was equal to the rate that caused 20% growth reduction at the initial stages and the minimum rate required to control weeds was equal to the rate that resulted in 80% growth reduction of weeds or 80% weed control efficacy of the herbicide. Based on these results, the use of pretilachlor and butachlor in weed control in jute was safe.
